A Song For Europe

I'm listening to "Stranded" by Roxy Music right now. Oh how I love that
album. I loved it before I became all jaded and worldly, and now, when I
spin it on my record player, it instantly takes me back to the days of
innocence, hope and naivety. Rather ironic considering the headiness of
the album. As I was yet to experience any real adventures, I was
fascinated by Ferry's portrayal of life.

Here are some lyrics from I think Bryan Ferry's only co-written song
from the 70s. He wrote it with Andy Mackay, saxophonist/oboist of Roxy
Music.

The Latin and French at the end adds to the dramatic impact of this very
heart wrenching torch song.

A Song For Europe by Bryan Ferry & Andy Mackay

Here as I sit
At this empty cafe
Thinking of you
I remember
All those moments
Lost in wonder
That we´ll never
Find again
Though the world
Is my oyster
It´s only a shell
Full of memories
And here by the seine
Notre-dame casts
A long lonely shadow
Now - only sorrow
No tomorrow
There´s no today for us
Nothing is there
For us to share
But yesterday

These cities may change
But there always remains
My obsession
Through silken waters
My gondola glides
And the bridge - it sighs ...
I remember
All those moments
Lost in wonder
That we´ll never
Find again
There´s no more time for us
Nothing is there
For us to share
But yesterdays

Ecce momenta
Illa mirabilia
Quae captabit
In aeternum
Memor
Modo dolores
Sunt in dies
Non est reliquum
Vero tantum
Comminicamus
Perdita
Tous ces moments
Perdus dans l`enchantement
Qui ne reviendront
Jamais
Pas d´aujourd´hui pour nous
Pour nous il n´y a rien
A partager
Sauf le passé

All the lonely people

I was sitting by myself early on tonight - for about an hour at PopTarts
and a man came and asked if he could join me. He said he didn't know
anyone and would love to have a chat. I didn't really feel like a chat
with a stranger, but you know, loneliness is a terrible thing - and I
extended my empathy. He'd admitted to being a loner - "maybe like you"
he said... I tried to explain that I liked to sit by myself cause I
can't hear over the music and it's just easier that way - so I don't
have to decipher conversation I can't hear and I don't want to yell.
Alas, his timing was just wrong. A few moments after he sat down, all my
singer friends arrived and the awkward polite chit chat proved too much
after about 20 mins and he said "I'll let you go". Made me sad. Made me
realise there are some terribly lonely people out there... and while I
have many lonely moments... I'm lucky enough to have a husband whom I
love, and some friends I see occasionally.

It's Bird Wars Out There Today

Poor birdies. The noisy miners (Australian native honeyeater) and the
Currawongs are teaming forces to attack a very large cuckoo trying to
take over their turf, and in all probability, trying to lay eggs in
their nests while it pushes out the chicks and eggs of its new host
nest. The miners and currawongs have no hope at all but are putting up a
very valiant effort. The cuckoo is the size of an eagle. I thought it
was at first. Have never seen one so close before and it's one of the
biggest birds I've seen in the suburbs. Nature can be very cruel.

Hey Hey, We're Not All Heathens Harry!

The black face skit on last night's hey hey it's saturday is causing a huge uproar. Most Australians according to talk back radio seem to be genuinely shocked and disgusted at the reaction by Harry Connick Jnr. Let me say, I am NOT one of them.

This is the type of humour (and I use the term loosely) for which Hey Hey is renowned. They laugh at anything which is the standard gamut of joke fodder in Australia; fat people, men dressed as women, women's body shape and other more nefarious items such as (rarely seen) black face.

Now, don't get me wrong; I understand, but do not condone, the reaction of a vast portion of the Australian audience. It's one of ignorance. Most Australians are completely unaware that the black face is a symbol of black oppression and humiliation in America. However, as the law would say, ignorance is no defence. I'm not eloquent enough to explain the entire history of blackface, but this wikipedia link will give a good introduction.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface

I remember the original skit from last night's show when it first appeared twenty years ago and I wondered how they could be so ignorant back then - especially as the performers are all apparently intelligent educated men (doctors)! To see it again last night, I just knew Harry Connick Jnr would be horrified. I was embarrassed for him, for Australia and for the apparently iconic show Hey Hey It's Saturday. Harry had no choice but to refute it and I'm glad he did.

How the producer let it get to air, I will never know!

PS. I think I've decided on album launch venue. It's one of Sydney's lushest spots, and one of my favourites with a great cocktail and dining area, and a fabulous stage - and most importantly for me, a nice little backstage area. I'm really not a big fan of not being able to sit and chill backstage before a show, so dressing room is paramount. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just somewhere to chill... It's also a tricky time of year with holidays coming up, Christmas, New Year's etc. I'm almost leaning towards having the launch in January 2010. Seems a long time away, but if the past year is anything to go by, this will fly by in the blink of an eye.

Time waits for noone

I was watching the Bold & the Beautiful the other day, as I do every week day. Unlike some, I am entirely unafraid to admit I love the show and have done for 22 years. It was there for me like some new friend when I was first starting at the Conservatorium. I remember a young Brooke, Caroline, Stephanie and Eric, plus an almost impossibly handsome young Ridge and how glamourous it all seemed to me.

I guess back then, it didn't occur to me that these people, actors and their characters would be such a huge part of my life's timeline. As they grew and developed, so did I. Which brings me to my point of this blog. The episode I watched two days ago was probably the most poignant one I've ever seen. Brooke was lamenting to her nemesis Stephanie - who was in fine and unusual empathic mode towards Brooke - about how noone tells you that it all goes so quickly. I could almost feel it as though Katherine Kelly Lang was saying it herself, rather than just Brooke the character.

It is true you know. Life does go by so quickly. I'm feeling it too. I look back to my 20s and wonder how I survived. So young and innocent. While I was trying to survive, my dreams got left by the wayside, as I tried to figure out how to achieve them with circumstances against me.

A lot of it was about having fun and wasting my youth, but much of it was about little confidence and/or not really believing I deserved happiness.

With age comes an urgency to live life the way you want. You realise how precious it all is, how fleeting it all is, for the people you love, the ones you know, and most of all for yoursef.

So, I guess what I am trying to say is that life is short. If you have a passion, please follow it. Believe in yourself - even when others don't; trust in yourself - be your own guiding light - because you don't want to look back and wish you had.

I hope you all realise your dreams (if you have one), I hope you find love (if you want one), but most of all, I hope you'll be happy.

I've just finished a promo video for the new album too. In it, I talk about a few songs from Planets Aligned, including That's The Way It Used To Be, The Weather and Felt So Good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfIbkOZmaEU

(You can hear "The Weather" in its entirety at my myspace page)

Words and music copyright Anne-Lise Larsen 2009.

Here they be:

The Weather

Never could explain why much in life is do or die
Still don't understand how true love slipped through my hands
Pondering mistakes of mine really is a waste of time
Forgive my indulgence, intelligent but not much sense

I get so sad
Sad sad sad about the weather
I get so mad
Mad mad mad about it all
Yes I've had
Just about enough of your crap see you later
Now I'm glad
Glad glad glad you are gone

Sometimes I get caught in mourning for what might have been
Hoping for integrity waiting an eternity
Another friend has done me in, it must be the latest thing
Dread to think how hold I'll be when I'm older than I be

I get so sad
Sad sad sad about the weather
I get so mad
Mad mad mad about it all
Yes I've had
Just about enough of your crap see you later
Now I'm glad
Glad glad glad you are gone

The lovely thing about this life we all live
Nothing has to be carved out in stone
If you want to change things you just have to brave
The morning light and live another day

Could You Be The One (I've Been Looking For)?

I feel faint and my heart is weak
My pulse is racing I feel sick
My palms are sweaty
The air is thick
I'm wide awake but
Still in a dream

Could you be the one I've been looking for?
Could you be the one of my dreams?

Not many times I have felt this way
Excited and anxious but come what may
Exhaling sad thoughts of yesterday
Breathing in fresh air, living again!

Could you be the one I've been looking for?
Could you be the one of my dreams?

Let me down, gently down
This feels so good but I've been fooled before
Let me down, gently down
If it's good for you too, I think I'll stick around

Could you be the one I've been looking for?
Could you be the one of my dreams?

A Little Dissonance

A little dissonance feels good
Makes me feel comfortable
It makes me go all a tingle
In a way that I wish you could

When the bass keeps pounding my brain
Then the drums give me more of the same
And I like it
Feel that rhythm
Man I love it
I'm in heaven

A simple melody hits me
In all the places that I never knew
Something about the music gets to me
In a way I wish the song was you

When the bass keeps pounding my brain
Then the drums give me more of the same
And I like it
Feel that rhythm
Man I love it
I'm in heaven

Ja, ich liebe
Ja, ich liebe

And I like it
Feel that rhythm
Man I love it
I'm in heaven

Bring it down now, take it down now.

In memoriam

I was not a huge fan of Michael Jackson, but there is one song I absolutely loved and will always make me respect him. "Remember the Time". I think it's Michael at his best. It's a sexy song and his personality, the true essence, just shines through...at least, that's how I feel it. It's very sad to lose him so suddenly, and it was long before his time.

I'm incredibly sad to hear about Farrah. She was a beautiful woman who left a big impression on a little girl in the 70s. It's sad to have seen her, and her family, suffer for such a long time, but at least she has some peace from her pain now.

My heart also goes out to the man, and his family, who was inadvertently killed today in Sydney. I haven't heard the details because it's been overshadowed by the two deaths above, but I understand he was shot in the head by thieves. It may have been accidental. It may have been on purpose. I don't know. All I know, is that he was in the wrong place, the wrong time, and his life has been snuffed out by boys who have their whole lives ahead of them.

Life is so precious. It's why I get so sad. I just feel like I haven't done enough yet. Live your life.

Almost an album

I burned 8 tracks to a cd yesterday to have a listen to my "almost an album"... in the car, on my ipod, home stereo, anywhere to get a feel and see if there's stuff I need to fix. I am quite amazed at what I've done. Working on final songs now...another month or so until I can master everything I think. Now I have to think about artwork for the album, and a title. What on earth am I going to call it?

16 June 2009

That's the way it used to be

Just putting down the final vocals for my latest album contribution. It's a song called "That's The Way It Used To Be". It's probably my bitterest song yet and touches somewhat on the tragique artiste psyche of mine. No touchy feely happiness here I'm afraid. There's a lot of hidden meaning in this one. It's definitely been a therapeutic experience writing it.

Anyway, this one fairly rocks along at a frantic pace. There's a sneek peak of it in my Facebook music player btw.

That's The Way It Used To Be

Evergreen, like the leaves on the trees in the summertime
Crystal clear like the moon and the stars of the evening sky
Feel the pull of the waves on the turn of the morning tide
No regrets, surely that must of all be the biggest lie!

That's the way it used to be
Little bit by little by I've gleaned
That's the way it used to be
Nothing is ever quite as it seems

Never cared, well not much just a bit, you know how it is
People come, people go, people stay, ignorance is bliss
Two a day, was his way, see a doctor if pain persists
It's a shock, when it finally comes, ceases and desists

That's the way it used to be
Little bit by little by I've gleaned
That's the way it used to be
Nothing is ever quite as it seems

At the time, well it was what it was, appearances deceive
Present day, and it is what it is, not how I perceived

That's the way it used to be
Little bit by little by I've gleaned
That's the way it used to be
Nothing is ever quite as it seems

All that's changed, is the bedrock of truth that I once believed, the girl, the foundation of me, remains crumbled and aggrieved, unresolved, never to be

That's the way that's the way that's the way that's the way that's the way that's the way

A slight rejection heartache

Well, I wasn't selected for inclusion on the Roxy Music tribute. To say I'm not disappointed wouldn't be true, but I have to accept it and move on. I would have loved to have been able to connect with other Roxy Music fans around the world, but looking positively, I don't have to deal with their scrutiny and in some cases I'm sure, scorn, of my interpretation on a much beloved track either. I also don't have to compromise on doing the track in any other way but how I would like to do it, so that's another plus. I guess the producers of the project were looking for something else.

Another plus is that I can get back to working on my album! Hooray!

If you'd like to hear the rejected unmastered version, I'll have it available on my website for a week or so.

In Every Dream Home A Heartache

This has been a very busy past week as I've been working to a rather unforeseen deadline. An opportunity to prepare and submit my own version of Roxy Music's "In Every Dream Home A Hearthache" arose and there was no chance of my refusing this challenge! It's been an exciting week concocting my own version of this song and I think what I've come up with is a fitting tribute to the original. Unfortunately, my mother is horrified at the thought of her daughter singing about a blow up doll, but you can't please everyone.

Now, whether or not the song will be included on this American three cd set tribute is another matter. I was given the brief of dark and powerful. I think I've achieved this, but taste is taste and one person's delight is another's disdain.

Shall keep my fingers crossed for inclusion, as it will close the first CD of the tribute trilogy and it would be fantastic to reach out to the Roxy Music fans worldwide in this forum and particularly, performing such a powerful and slightly disturbing song - a favourite of many Roxy Music fans. More about the project below:

I will let you know how I go!

The Dream by Anne-Lise Larsen

Hide and seek of evening shadows on the wall
flickering of candlelight my guard to fall
Is there something in the way he looks at me
Does he see it mirrored when I gaze at he?

Oh it's the dream I'm floating on
It's the dream I'm floating on
Don't make it real

A strange intoxicating air comes over we
Curious and curiouser deux esprit
Minding business dull existence through the day
Evening falls and self bound hearts are led astray

Oh it's the dream I'm floating on
It's the dream I'm floating on
Don't make it real

In my waking hours my thoughts are all of you
As the night reclaims my mind you're in there too
Inescapable headiness here to stay
And I wouldn't want it any other way

Oh it's the dream I'm floating on
It's the dream I'm floating on
Don't make it real

Oh my god I HATE leaf blowers

I am sitting here trying to hear a track through my headphones (I've given up the idea of recording any vocals) and I'm am virtually deafened by the leaf blower outside. I can't hear anything. It's so loud I can't hear myself think. BAN ALL LEAF BLOWERS!

"Could You Be The One" is the first single from Anne-Lise Larsen's forthcoming studio album, which will be released in late 2009. "Could You Be The One" is a romantic, dreamy adventure, encapturing the first moments of new romance, and the quietly scary epiphany, that this could be the real thing.

The B sides include two audience bootleg recordings of Anne-Lise's recent gig at The Basement in which she accompanied herself with her cello!

Lyrics

I feel faint and my heart is weak
My pulse is racing I feel sick
My head is spinning the air is thick
I'm wide awake but still in a dream

Could you be the one I've been looking for
Could you be the one of my dreams

Not many times I have felt this way
Excited and anxious but come what may
Exhaling sad thoughts of yesterday
Breathing in fresh air living again

Could you be the one I've been looking for
Could you be the one of my dreams

Let me down, gently down
This feels so good but I've been fooled before
Let me down, gently down
If it's good for you too I think I'll stick around

(It's been a while since I blogged, I know!)

Working on Rest of My Days at the moment. It's one of my usual heartwrenching ditties. Quite a bluesy rock feel to it, with a bit of lush electronic synthesiser sounds thrown in. It's one of my favourite songs and is actually written about a few people all rolled into the one storyline. You'll just have to guess who they are! Tee hee.

This song is a difficult one to record vocally as there's so many dynamics in it. The verses are quiet and melancholy and the lead into the chorus is uber-mad and pissed off loud and high. There's also hardly anywhere for me to breathe in this one, so I'm glad those underwater swimming lessons are paying off now!
